Has Internet Technology Gone Too Far?
Nearly everyone a person comes in contact with these days has a cellular phone, ipad, iPod, laptop, notebook and some sort of gaming gadget. It is easy to see that the internet has become a large portion of people’s lives from home to work. What is not really clear is the effect it is having on people and their relationships with their friends and family.
Take for example a typical family dinner at a local restaurant. While dinning out it is easy to see a family with parents talking and texting on cell phones and children playing on hand held game gadgets. Has society lost communication skills due to the technological wave? Rather than talking to the outside world is it really too much that a family sit down and communicate and talk about their day?
Television is another thing that has become integrated with the internet. It is possible to watch favorite television shows on a cell phone, computer or whatever gadget can connect to the World Wide Web. With a set of headphones, a student can sit in class watching television and some teachers will never be any the wiser.
In 2006, a study was conducted that said most homes in America have more television sets than people. Forget the black and white television sets of the late 70′s early 80′s. Today’s, TV’s are 3D and have HDTV capabilities, not to mention the power to connect to the internet and surf from one’s couch.
What about good old fashioned communication? What about meeting a friend and having coffee and discussing their lives and spending time together? Today’s relationships have evolved into internet based and are lacking the personal touch.
Children have traded going outside and playing with friends for sitting on a computer with chat rooms and games going simultaneously. The social media frenzy has also fueled another layer of separating people from the outside world and making interactions all via the web.
Have all of these technological advances changed the way people communicate with each other and the world around them? By observing society in general, one would have to conclude that people are becoming socially unplugged and rather reaching for the plug of a laptop or anything that will connect them to the internet.
Is it time to unplug from the World Wide Web and spend time with family and friends again? What about a nice family picnic or a trip to the local ice cream shop? Making time for social activities is a great way to get in touch with friends outside of the internet.
Daily interaction with other people is important, as it is healthy for one’s psyche. A person who sits on the internet all day long and plays games or surfs may tend to be a loner.
Old fashioned socials where people mingled and talked about each other’s lives have been traded for a short blurb on social media as a way to keep up with friends and family. While all of these gadgets and gismos have their purpose, should limitations be set to improve the social skills of the next generation?
Therefore it can be said that internet plays a huge role in transforming the life of human beings. Everything in today’s life has become fast paced. And to keep up with this fast moving world one needs the forte of Internet technology. Be it education, research, work, the use of internet is omnipresent.
Therefore the access to internet is very important and cannot be sufficed by any other technology. Besides this one should also keep abreast with the latest additions to this technology to get the best out of it.
