Lars Christian Iuel is currently the Head of Marketing at Telenor Group’s Asia office in Bangkok. Prior to that, he worked three years as the CMO of Telenor Pakistan. He has a diverse international background, both from different positions in Telenor and from Cell One in Namibia.

My admiration for Telenor Pakistan, and for the country as a whole, fills me with high expectations and I am very eager to take on the assignment. I know the people of the organization well and I am confident that together we can continue to produce great results. An agreement between PIA and Tameer Microfinance Bank for the provision of the services was signed by Nadeem Hussain, President Tameer Microfinance Bank and Managing Director PIA, Captain Nadeem Khan Yousufzai. The signing ceremony was held at PIA Head Office and attended by officials of Tameer Bank, PIA, and Telenor Pakistan.

Managing Director PIA Captain Nadeem Yousufzai while sharing his comments on the occasion said that PIA passengers will now have an added advantage of Paying for tickets through Easypaisa outlets across Pakistan. “PIA passengers’ comfort and convenience has always been the airline’s priority and this agreement is another facility being offered to passengers. Currently, passengers have the facility of buying PIA tickets from PIA Booking Offices, PIA’s website and airline travel agents. The new facility will expand to facilitate our valued customers,” he said.

Nadeem Hussain, in his comments following the agreement, said: “Easypaisa is delighted to become a partner with PIAC as payment solution provider for their customers, offering them our unique branchless banking facility. Unlike conventional payment services, Easypaisa services are available round the clock and offer customers an alternative payment process which is secure, reliable, and efficient. We are sure that PIA customers will find it more convenient than ever to use Easypaisa outlets when paying for their air tickets.”

As a result of the agreement, a PIA passenger, after getting a PNR (reservation) by calling PIA Call Centre at 111-786-786, will be able to pay at any Easypaisa outlet and get the ticket issued. The receipt and confirmation will be communicated to the customer through an SMS. Passengers will be able to get a print from any of PIA Sales counter throughout Pakistan or from PIA offices at an airport. This can be done anytime even on the day of the flight. The facility is expected to be launched by January 1, 2012.

Pakistan’s first real branchless banking solution, Easypaisa, was launched jointly by Telenor Pakistan and Tameer Microfinance Bank in 2009. Since then, it has helped provide people across Pakistan with access to convenient and secure financial services. Today, Easypaisa services are available at over 12,000 outlets in 550 cities. Telenor Pakistan holds a majority share in Tameer Microfinance Bank Limited (TMBL), licensed by State Bank of Pakistan. TMBL is the first bank to have approval to conduct branchless banking business in Pakistan.

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan being briefed by Jon Fredrik Baksaas, President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Telenor about new satellite systems on her visit to Telenor Head Office.

The minister appreciated the role and position of the company in Pakistan’s telecommunication market. She asked the company to bring new technologies to Pakistan. She also discussed how the company could assist the Ministry of Information in utilization of social media for dissemination of information to the people of Pakistan as well to the foreign public.

The CEO told the minister that the company has generated employment apart from playing its role in providing communication tools to the people of Pakistan. The Minister emphasized that Pakistan deserves special attention from foreign investors in the wake of the losses Pakistan’s economy has suffered due to its role in war against terrorism. She also asked Telenor to bring new technologies in telecommunication sector to Pakistan.

Later, she visited the offices of another telecommunication out-fit Lebara and its officials. She was accompanied during both the visits by high officials of Ministry of Information as well Pakistan’s Charge d’ Affairs in Norway.

The announcement was made in a meeting here today of Telenor Pakistan and PRCS officials with Mrs Nargis N.D. Khan, Provincial Minister for Social Welfare, Sindh.

The Sindh Provincial Minister, responding to the announcement, said

“We appreciate Telenor Pakistan’s quick response to the situation and its offer to provide food items to the flood-affected communities of Sindh. The Government of Sindh will extend all-out support to Telenor Pakistan and its implementing partner Pakistan Red Crescent Society in distributing the relief items among the affected.”

“Telenor Pakistan and its employees are extremely saddened by the situation in the flood-affected areas of Sindh, and we are trying to reach out to help those in need. In an effort to provide immediate relief to those affected, Telenor Pakistan has responded within 24 hours to an appeal for assistance. We are providing Rs45 million worth of food items and clean drinking water to 10,000 families. Pakistan Red Crescent Society, our implementing partner, is ensuring that the food and water are provided to those most in need.”

Muhammad Ilyas Khan, Secretary-General PRCS, in his comments said:

“Pakistan Red Crescent Society and Telenor Pakistan are long-term partners and have been working on disaster preparedness and disaster response for the last five years. Telenor Pakistan has always provided timely assistance to the people affected by disasters. Their contribution will provide food packs to 10,000 families for two weeks.”

As a responsible corporate citizen, Telenor Pakistan believes in giving back to communities in which it operates. Last year, Telenor Pakistan donated over Rs100 million toward relief and rehabilitation efforts following Pakistan’s worst-ever floods.

CEO Telenor said that the company showed organic revenue growth of 7% in the 2nd quarter of 2011 along with healthy customer growth and appreciable margins. Telenor achieved an operating cash flow margin of 20% in a period with large investments in the network to meet the healthy improvement in data.

Telenor also reported that around 8 million customers had been added during the 2nd quarter. Majority of these are from the Asian region. The new services launched in the Nordics also had a positive effects on the subscriber base. Baksaas also said that the reasons for network outage that took place in Norway in June had been identified and corrective measures taken. He said that Asian Operations showed an excellent organic revenue growth of 21%.

Commenting on the 2G scandal in India, Baksaas said that Telenor has more than 20 million subscribers in India and the licenses were awarded prior to Telenor’s arrival in the Indian Market. He said that Telenor had paid proper fees as per policy and Indian law in this regard so the inquires will not effect the company’s business in India.

Telenor CEO expressed his hope that the company will maintain the growth trends by providing easy-to-use high quality services and at the same time upgrade its system to adopt latest technologies for its users. He said that in the 2nd quarter alone, Telenor had invested more than one billion NOK in future technologies in Norway.

Baksaas also announced the new share buy-back program for 2011 for about 3% of the outstanding shares based on the company’s strong financial position. He said that with the dividends paid in June and this new program, Telenor confirmed its aim to deliver a competitive shareholder remuneration.

The number of subscriptions in Pakistan increased by 914,000 which is 12% higher than the end of 2nd quarter in 2010. The APRU increased by 3% due to higher average usage. Telenor’s total revenues in Pakistan also increased by 15% while EBITDA margin increased by 3%. Capital Expenditure was focused on network capacity to increase subscriber growth and traffic volume.

Amir Ibrahim, CMO, Telenor Pakistan expressed his happiness over the progress showed by the company in the 2nd quarter. He appreciated various parameters that showed good performance. Telenor and Tameer Bank’s joint project easypaisa won Shaukat Khanum Social Responsibility Award due to its service to the Pakistani Society.

Telenor Pakistan has also launched Djuice’s ‘Apportunity’, a service that lets developers from Pakistan develop mobile apps and get them published. These apps can be published on Nokia’s Ovi store, Apple’s app store and the Android market place.

Aamir Ibrahim said that Multan had been the center of the Southern Punjab region. He also said that the growth of Telenor users in the city and potential for business had pushed them to make the move. He also hoped that the S&SC will play an important role in serving their customers.

Initially this case was presented in front of the District and Session Judges in Islamabad. The case was then referred to the Additional Session Judge, Mr Kamran Basharat Mufti, by the judicial officer for more proceedings which are scheduled to be held on July 19.

A local telecommunication company submitted a complaint of this incident and an FIR was registered, under section 36,37 of Electronic Transaction Ordinance 2002, against 11 members of a gang for making fake mobile phone scratch cards.

On 16^th may 2008, a local telecom company lodged a protest with the FIA Director General Islamabad that due to the leakage of some important information  some unkown persons have manufactured a large sum of fake scratch cards which are almost 17,750,000 in number. out of that 905,987 cards were sold in the local market which caused a total loss of 134.4 million to the company. For further proceedings this issue was referred to the FIA crime department which would submit its report on June 14^th 2008.

According to the information provided by the FIA, initially the case was given in the hands of Sub Inspector Farooq Latif who recommended for lodging an FIR against the alleged criminals.

During the inquiry that Usman Zafar who was a resident of sector G-11/3 Islamabad along with another man named Syed Nabi was found accused of making fake mobile scratch cards. Later it was also learnt that Usman Zafar was the ring leader of the group which made these cards illegally and it was proved by the allegations against Syed Nabi that he somehow sold fake scratch cards worth Rs 9 million. Both the accused criminals were not present in the inquiry proceedings which left no other option for the inquiry officer but to register a case against the accused. But Usman Zafar being aware of the danger had taken the precautionary measures and had left the country when police raided on his house soon after the inquiry. After almost 2 years on his return to Pakistan he was arrested, on October 22 2010. His physical remand was obtained by the police from the competent court from 23-11-2010 to 03-12-1010.

The investigating team had also given chance to the complainant throughout the investigation to provide sensible clues against the accused. Moreover, the other 10 members of the gang were also revealed as advancements took place in the investigation. Apat from the accused Usman Zafar, the other 10 members were Ghalib Virk, Zahid Sindhu, Haji Ramzan, Rizwan Ali, Asif Ch, Younas Khan, Jamal Raza, Kazim Shehzad, Rashid Ahmed and Syed Nabi.

As the story un covered, apart from making illegal scratch cards, the printing press where these scratch cards were made was also running illegally by the accused, where the scratch cards were developed. A raid was conducted there and it was learnt that the accused along with his other fellows printed scratch cards of different telecommunication companies which are providing service in Pakistan.

The sources from FIA informed that during the raid a printing press machine and scratch cards more than 50 million were found and taken into custody. FIA confirmed that all the gang members are not yet arrested and the agency is trying its best to trace and arrest them. Meanwhile Syed Nabi did not attend the investigations so the was declared absconder by the court.
