There are many IT related blogs and websites spreading the IT related rumors and controversies. Recently these websites have published on 19 Nov, 2009 that ” Warid Telecom becomes the official cellular company of Punjab University” without knowing the real facts of the MoU signed between the University of the Punjab and WaridTel Pakistan. If you Google the phrase “Warid Telecom becomes the official cellular company of Punjab University” you will still find a link to some of these websites published similar information.

PakPoint.com contacted both the parties involved in the MoU (University of the Punjab and WaridTel Pakistan) and found a official copy of Warid Press Release which does not says that “Warid Telecom becomes the official cellular company of Punjab University”. In addition PU officials on behalf of VC Prof Mujahid Kamran University of the Punjab clarified the situation in these words.
Warid Telecom has not become the official Cellular company of the University of the Punjab, Lahore. An MOU has been signed between Warid Telecom and Punjab University. According to the MOU, the Warid Telecom will provide voluntarily mobile phone services to the faculty members, employees and students of the University at discounted rates. It will not be binding to the university, faculty members or employees of the university to avail mobile services from Warid Telecom. Warid Telecom will not be the only cellular company to offer these services. The University is open for any mobile company to offer these services to its employees and students. The University is also in discussion with other mobile companies to provide cellular services to employees and students of the university.
