To safeguard the interests of the consumer and to provide conducive and enabling business environment for all investors in the country, Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) has very important role. Hence, government should ensure the existence of such bodies which are instrumental for transparent and good governance as well. Munawar Iqbal, the Central President of Pakistan Computer Association (PCA) said this while speaking at the occasion of the general body meeting of the association here on the last day.
“It is imperative for the government to make arrangements for the abolition of monopolies from the economic sector and to check the alarming trend of the cartelization in the various sectors of the economy,” Munawar Iqbal said. He added that it was unfortunate that some economic and trade organizations had been given a “free hand” in the past and they were allowed to make cartels and steal from the people through arbitrary fixation of prices and this fleecing has to be end for good now.
The Central President of the PCA opined at the occasion that CCP has played a very vital role to discourage monopolies, abuse of dominance, and deceptive marketing tactics. He said that without safeguarding the interests of small investors, we can not expect an economic turn on in the country. However, he said, its unfortunate that the cartels and mafias were hell bent to stop and hamper the working of such institutes.
Munawar Iqbal said that besides providing conducive environment to businessmen, it is also the duty of the government to safeguard the interests of the masses, hence, he said, the existence of institutes like CCP is vital. He said that the government should immediately take all stakeholders on board and finalize the legislation and re-promulgate the Competition Ordinance 2007 for the immediate to redress immediate legal concerns in this regard.
It was highly encouraging factor that CCP, led by its dynamic chairman Khalid Mirza, has been able to show tremendous results in short span of time. Thus, the smooth running of the CCP will not only ensure a healthy business competition in the country but it will also establish the credibility of the democratic regime as servant of the people of Pakistan, he concluded.
